This seminar aims to explore virtual encounters between Saussure, Kant and Humboldt brothers in the light of moral and neuropsychology. It enlarges on the symbiosis of our mind and environment, i.e. the interconnectedness (Zusammenhang) between our verbal and non-verbal faculties in dealing with art, nature and culture. As avid thinkers, linguists, naturalists and explorers of the world, the four theorists converged on the going together of our language, memory and imagination while we are observing or communicating. In addition to examining their key writings, this seminar also draws on certain notions such as play and somaesthetics that emphasize our conscious and effective control of actions and interpretations. All in all, this seminar provides postgraduate students with a deeper understanding of our mental power while promoting a sharpening of approaches to analyzing artistic texts encoded in diverse media.
